Tall stalks, to 10′, carry bright yellow flowers above the broad, coarse foliage that grows about 2′ tall in clusters close to the ground. Foliage is spade-shaped with a rough, “cat’s tongue” texture typical of Silphiums. Attracts bees and parasitic wasps.
